When Plans Change: Staivo’s Policy on Disruptive and Major Events
🌦️ What’s Considered Foreseeable
Some disruptions are common enough to be expected in certain regions or seasons. These are not covered under Staivo’s cancellation policy.
🌪️ Tropical Storms & Cyclones
Storms during known seasons are considered foreseeable:
- Gulf of Mexico: June – November
- Caribbean: June – November
- South Pacific: November – April
- Australia: November – April
❄️ Winter Conditions & Storms
Snowstorms and icy conditions are common in colder months:
- North America: December – February
- Europe: December – February
- Japan: December – February
🦠 Endemic Diseases
Diseases that are regularly present in certain regions are considered foreseeable:
- Asia: Dengue, Malaria, Hepatitis
- Africa: Malaria, Yellow Fever
- South America: Zika, Chikungunya
For these types of events, we recommend reviewing your Cancellation & Refund Policy and considering travel insurance for added protection.
✅ What Qualifies as a Major Disruptive Event
Major events are rare, large-scale disruptions that prevent or legally prohibit a reservation from being completed. When Staivo activates this policy, guests and hosts are protected regardless of the listing’s cancellation terms.
- 🦠 Public Health Emergencies: Government-declared epidemics or pandemics (excluding endemic diseases)
- 🚫 Government Travel Restrictions: Mandatory bans or evacuation orders
- ⚔️ Military Actions & Hostilities: War, terrorism, riots, civil unrest
- 💡 Utility Outages: Large-scale loss of heat, water, or electricity
- 🌪️ Natural Disasters: Severe weather events that trigger covered consequences
📋 What Happens If You’re Affected
If Staivo activates this policy for your area and dates, you may be eligible for:
- Full refund
- Travel credit
- Other consideration depending on the situation
Hosts can cancel without penalties, and their calendar will be blocked for the affected dates.
🤔 What’s Not Covered
Some disruptions, while frustrating, fall outside this policy. These include:
- Personal illness or injury
- Government obligations like jury duty
- Non-binding travel advisories
- Event cancellations or rescheduling
- Transportation issues unrelated to a covered event
In these cases, your reservation follows the Cancellation & Refund Policy. We encourage open communication with your host to find a fair solution.
🏡 How This Affects Hosts
Hosts impacted by a covered event can cancel without fees. However:
- No payout is issued for cancelled dates
- If payout was already made, it will be withheld from future payments
- Listings must remain habitable and consistent with their description
Staivo expects hosts to cancel if their property becomes uninhabitable. This protects guests and maintains trust across the platform.
